HUSBANDS AT A DISCOUNT

By ••OMEGA"

NEWS lias come recently of tha
formation of an Anti-Husband Club. Evi-
dently husban'is—poor varmints-—have
fallen on evil days !

Friends nficn asked Marie Corelli
why she never married. "There is no
need", she used to reply "for 1 have
three pets at home which together answer
the same purpose as a husband. I have
i dog which growls all mcnung a parrot
which swears all afternoon and a cat
which comes home late at night".

This is a very unllaf.erinp picture,
to be sure. The modern women of the
West has thrown her male consort on
the dustheap The unmarried ones prefer
to remain spinsters, anil the married
ones are anxious to wash their hands
clean of their husbands. Recently I read
that a lady—she must have been an
inexp rienced one - aih erti.-ed for a bus
band. And she was overwhelmed with
letters from married wjmen sayirg— "you
can have mine' . I would not be Mirprised
to hear that she gave up the task and
joined the cult of singlc-blessedn'.ss.

For one thing; it is good that
women arc now trying to show t hat they
can stand on their lega and that husband
are not indispenable. 11 men choose to
remain bachelors and piideonthat fact,
why women too can give the other sex
a wide berth and proclaim to the world,
'If you are reluctant, we are even more
so. There is alio man's point of view
which cannot be ignored. Here is a p;ece
of typical revolt against modern marriage:

''The modern gill does not want
children, She ot -vot cook she can't or

won't mend Iter husbands clothes: the
does not intend to sit at home. Whv
should I marry in order to take a girl
(and always the same girl) to the
pictures?"

Now l»t us try to examine both
sides of this problem. Mine t'orelli seuma
to think that it is the male pari tier
'who growls all morning and swears all
afternoon". For all 1 believe, this allega-
tion is grossly exaggerated, if not ab-
solutely wrong. Who can beat a women
in her native art of •'glowing"? It is
mainly her province to scold and nag.
A women's tongue strikes like a whiplash
and. as time advances it gets more
sharpened It is never mellowed. When
I say so. I am talking chiefly of Marrie
f 'orelli's country women. Of course, in the
East, particularly India, women are fre-
quently snubbed by men anil even phy-
sical chastisement is not unknown li.n
not bo in the the land of Mime Cor. Hi.
There most of the wag.jng is done bv
women's tongue She hurls opprobrious
enhithets on hereon sort nndasthe member
of a patient and (nffering trib\ he pockets
ail sorts of insults and indignities.
Many husbands haveearned the nickname
of ' pig", "silly idiot' or "fool" is ,
term of veritable endearment. Corporal
punishment is als- now being Ireelv
administered both night and day

A men recently 1 asked the North
London Magistrate for a summons against
his wife for persistent cruelty. He said
he hail been 2!l weeks out of work and
because he could not sati-ify his wife's
