GOVERNORS TO BE ASKED TO RESIGN
All Part “A” State Governors will
will be asked to resign after the general
elections to enable fresh appointments
being made b}’ the “new” President of
the Republic in April or May.
Such a contingency is not provided
for in the Constitution, which lays down
that a Governor shall hold office for
a term of five years from the date on
which he enters upon his office’5.
Under Article 155 of the C’onstitu
tion ‘th** G vertior of a Sr ate shall be
appointed by the President by \vi rr int
under bis hand and seal” and “shall
hold office during the pleasure of the
President ”
In practice, however Governors’
appoint merits are made by the President
in consultation with the Prime Minister,
so that there is scope for polit/cal con-
siderations influencing their choice.
Since "a new Central Ministry” will
be in office after the general elections,
it may have been considered nreessnry
to give “the next Prime Minister' oppor-
tunity to advise the President in selecting
the new Governors.
As the present Governors have been
selected in consultation with Mr. Nehru,
who is likely to be Prime Minister again,
most of them may be re-apro;nted if
they are willing to serve another term
