GOOJ) WORK.
THU noise and bustle and in some
instances verbal mud-slinging by the
various parties contesting the elections
in the Darjeeling District is now over,
with Kalimpong, the las* constituency
in the district, having been to the
polls on Tuesday last. Most people
will not miss the blare of loudspeakers
and will now gratefully enjoy a sleep
without cacaphonic disturbance, but
while the oxcitemeht lasted, it certainly
brought life to this quiet town The
elections here passed smoothly without
incident and the district officers of the
administrative, police, and other depart-
ments, are to be heartily congratulated
on the efficient running of lhe poll.
Undoubtedly, and possibly unrealised by
most, the entire arrangements for the
election required outstanding organisation
and hard work on the part of all
concerned, and if the elections here arc
any standard by which the rest of the
elections in India can be judged, we
can well congratulate our citizens and
government for a really first class
effort which equals that of any advanced
democratic country elsewhere.
’ibe only regret is that the percentage
of polling was not very high, in fact
it reached only 50% in one or two
booths while the average was around 35%.
Perhaps the annual Beni Mela at the
confluence of the Rangit and Tista rivers
had something to do with this, though
the Mela itself was poorly attended.
There have been one or two
incidents in the elections of human
interest, There is the report of village
woman who after casting her vote,
prostrated herself before the ballot boxes,
and later the presiding and polling
officers, before leaving the booth Other
voters thought it auspicious to put in
a piece of ‘supari” along with their
ballot papers. While an enthusiastic
polling offiieer in Municipality Ward X,
insisted on applying a re illy liberal dose
of indelisble ink on the forefinger of
the voters, thus impairing their physical
charms for the ten days before which
the ink is alleged not to wear out.
'The district now awaits the counting
and results with interests. Forecasts are
usually proved wrong and nothing definite
will be known till the official figures
are released but from available reports
in seems that the contest in Kalimpong
will be a close one bet ween the congress
and communist candidates. while
Darjeeling, which \\a- considered a
stronghold for the communists, now
