SEVERAL APPEALS FILED

Twelve election peti-
tions have been filed with
the District Judge, Dar-
jeeling with prayers either
to declare election of cer-
tain candidates elected as
Municipal Commissioner in
Darjeeling and Kalimpong
invalid or to declare the
whole election null and
void due to certain alleged
irregularities in the elec
tion.
The election of Muni-
cipal Commissioners at
Darjeeling and Kalimpong
ended by the Hist cf
March 1952 in which 20
and 12 persons were elected
Municipal Commissioners
at Darjeeling and Kalim-
pong respectively, Some
of the candidates who
were defeated in the con-
test felt that their defeat
wa» not fair and so they
have filed appeals with
the District Judge at
Darjeelipg praying in some
cases to set aside the
election of particular per-
sona while in other cases
the prayer is to declare
the whole election null &
void due to the alleged
non fulfilment of certain
provisions of the Bengal
Municipal Act.
The following persons

the senior most lawyer
at Darjeeling, informations
reveal that the Kalimpong
appellants have encaged
a leading lawyer of North
Bengal to champion their
cause.
No date has vet been
fixed for the hearing of
the appeals

KURSEONG

It is understood that
a maternity clinic is shor-
tly to be established here.

nearly twentytwo thousand
Chinese Dollars, valued
approximately a t
Rs.83,000/- was intercepted
at. Teesta Bridge today as
an Indian merchant was
alleged to be carrying
the dollars to Calcutta.
The detection was
made by Havildar Indrasan
.Singh who was on duty
at the Teesta Bridge at
3 A. M. in the night.
On being asked to produce
permit to move the dollars
the occupants of the truck
on which the stuff was
being carried in gunny
packed cases could not
produce any authority
letter with the result that
the Havildar brought them
along with the dollars to
Kalimpong and made over
the case to the Officer-in-
charge, Kalimpong Police
Station. The Central Ex-
cise & Land Customs
officers at Kalimpong were
then informed of the
affair and linally they
took charge of it.
This is the largest
single seizure of Chinese
Dollars, their unauthorised
import into India being
prohibited under the pre-
sent Currency regulations
of the government of India.
