Kalimpong has now achieved
strategic importance by geographical
propinquity with Tibet, and to avoid
the possibility of being rated as a second
class hill-station in the future, the
matters referred to should be taken
in hand.
The numerous virtues of Kalimpong
are self evident but there is one which
is out .standing. This is the excellanl
relationship between all communities, be
thev hillmen or plainsmen. Tibetans c
Chinese, not obvious in a time of election
campaigning, but when the need is
powerful. An instance is the disaster
of 1950 when people of all communities
and parties gave succour without stint
for the relief and rescue of the people
who has been inundated by landslides.
Gurkha Leaguers, KSS workers. Commu-
nists, Congressmen, acted as one on
this occasion.
Our great and esteemed leader
Sri Jawaharlal Nehru is to visit Darjeeling,
Sikkim, and Kalimpong. This is a
momentous event when many hilifolk
will realise their dreams ot seeing and
hearing the Prime Minister and Congress
President for the first time in their
lives. In an introspective moment, ins-
pired by this visit, we can consider wl at
the citizenship of India means. A
cosmopolitan community, like one in
Kalimpong, is aw’are that unity is great,
and to be an Indian a distinction, no
