Sikkim Landlords
Association - which met at
Gangtok lost monday
have sent representations
to His Highness the
Maharaja of Sikkim for
withdrawal of attachment
orders issued by revenue
department of Sikkim
State on six landlords for
non payment of rent ille-
gally assessed on their
‘ Home farms” as landlords
hive not as yet relinqui-
shed legal rights to their
states and home farms
stated a spokesman of
the landlords here today.
The present position of
landlords in Sikkim,
ISi rial it an a iTimes
the spokesman added is
that landlords are regarded
by Sikkim State as “les-
sees” and leases have not
been renewed on date of
expiry of the present lease.
Landlords claim renewal
under the terms of the
leases or if the leases are
not renewed they demand
compensation.
For the last three
rears the State has been
collecting rents direct from
the tenants and not from
landlords as was customarv
except of home farm which
also has now been assessed.
In case the differences bet-
ween the state and the land-
lords are not settled in Sikkim.
|he landlords have decided
to take the issue to the
Registered 'Jo. C3032
Government of India. The
landlords are believed to
have applied for an interview
with Prime Minister Sri
Nehru during his visit to
the State on the 27th since
thev believe that India’s
interference in the matter
will be justified in view of
the large amount of money
that Si kim State gets
Mutually from India which
is a democratic country
and would not allow any
autocracy within its sphere
of influence.
