DARJEELING LANDSLIDES
ENQUIRY

Tlie Government of West Bengal
have constituted the Darjeeling Landslides
Enquiry Committee to investigate into
the causes of recurring disasters by land-
slides in the district of Darjeeling and
adjoining areas and to suggest remedial
measures therefor.

The Doputy Commissioner, Darjee-
ling, will be the Chairman.

The Chief Engineer, Works and
Buildings Department, Chief Engineer
(Roads), Development Department, Con
servator of Forests, Darjeeling. Superin-
tending Geologist, Geological Survey of
India, Senior Professor of Geology. Pre-
sidency College, Calcutta, Chairman, Dar-
jeelin Municipality, one representative of
the North Eastern Railway, one repreten-
tative of the Darjeeling Tea Planters’
Association and one representative of the
Institution of Engineers, India, will be
the Members. The Superintending Engi-
neer (Works and Buildings) Northern
Circle, will be the Secretary and Conve-
nor of the Committee.

Terms of reference

The Committee will examine the
existing protective measures which were
taken on previous occasions by way of
restoration of the damages done due to
landslides and/er other natural causes;
recommend further preventive measures,
if required, so as to minimise future
damages; examine whether any fresh
damage has taken place since the disaster
of June 1!I50, and if so, to investigate
the causes of such damages; record
geological changes occuring in the region
from time to time and to suggest pre-
ventive measures, if any, required to
cope with such changes; suggest a uniform
and co-ordinated policy in the matter
of restoration of damages—occasional or

annual; and function as a perman n!
consultative body for reference and advice,
whenever necessary.

The Enquiry Committee will be
assisted by a Sub-Committee consisting
of the Superintending Engineer (Works
and Buildings), NortherhTJifcle, Chairman,
Executive Engineer, North Eastern Rail-
way, Siliguri, one Geologist, Geological
Survey of India and Municipal Hydro-
electric Engineer (Works and Buildings),
Darjeeling Division, Secretary and Con-
venor of the Sub-*'ommittee.

This Sub-Committee will investigate
the changes in the geological structure
oLthe area and the damages done due
to Thndslides and other causes and to
suggest protective measures, if any; and
place the reports of the Sub Committee
before the main Committee when it meets
every alternate year—Press-Note.
