any other person. It is a matter of
regret however, that the Indian in Burma
are still caste ridden. Though' the rales
regarding inter-dining are not strictly
enforced, interc.aste marriages among them
are few.

There is no greater humiliation for a
"Burmese than to be beaten on his face.
Parents never spank their children on
their cheeks. A Burmese told me that
the. Japanese made the Burmese there
worst enemies from the day they hit a
Burmese .on his face during the occu-
pation.

Extremely nationalistic, the Burme-e
resent anything which even remotely
suggests a curb on their freedom to run
their own affairs. The first thing that
the Burmese Government did after in-
dependence in 1948 was to ask its Indian
and Chinese employees to either opt i'or
Burmese citizenship or .quit their jobs.

In international affairs. Burma is as
determined to avoid joining either of
the two existing blocs, as she is to
joining a Third Bloc of Asian nations,
though she .is anxious for closer regional
eooperation .'amon'g the powers concerned
, Fortunately, the Government of India
has shown a keen awareness of the mood
ol the Burmese pcoph* . and has hern
able to mn-injkrtif the friendliest relation
with them. Prime '.Minister Nehru said
in Parliament on March 17 : 'The rela-

tions with .Burma have hardly been
ever so cooperative and fi iendly as they
arc’ today/’ ,Still better results aie bound
to emerge from the present meetings
between the Prime Ministers of thp two
countries. ^
