QUO VADIS ? ‘

(Continued from page 6)

in human beings. knowledges must be
borrowed or acquired. Though the mass
of our people are illiterate, they are
not wanting in commonsense. They
can learn if taught properly. They must
be taught. Wo need education, without
it, research will be as useless as a one-
legged tongs. Our schools and colleges
should also offer courses in the funda-
mentals of the science of the land and
soil, plants and livestock, instead of
subjects which merely help the students
to pass the examinations and acquire
diplomas.- Not all of our youth can be
absorbed in town or city jobs. We need
them also 'in the fields and farms.

Last but not least, we must have
co-Operation, Our visions must not be
dimmed by party politics or communal
prejudices. Leo us build up our homeland
first ; make it flourish as an asset to the
Nation. Lot us make ourselves an in-
dispensable spoke in the wheel of
National "economy and not be a continual
‘red-underscored’ item in budget accounts.
Then, our demands will have a more
genuine ring, our voices will carry more
weight and fpr-tber. After that we can
tnove on to other reforms It is ironical to
think, that while we are squabbling over
our right to a separate administration,
while ,we are demanding better seed and
more fertilisers, the hind that we must
administer, that we must plant in and
plough, is literally slipping away from
underneath our feet<j

Now, more than ever, soil erosion
and soil conservation are coming to the
fore. With more mouths to feed, the world
is beginning to appreciate tho true worth
of the soil. The matter is evenv more
personal and .pertinent to us, perched as
we are on these slopes, which we must
cultivate to survive. We cannot afford

to be too late. This may be a slightly
exaggerated picture, but, one that must
be faced. It is like hearing the doctor’s
diagnosis of some dreaded malady about
a dear and ailiDg relative.

A little knowledge, tboy say, is a
dangerous thing. In this case no know-
ledge at all might prove disastrous. I
am no authority on soil conservation.
My own fields are clawed up by land-
slides, petty and severe. I write this in
the. hope that those, who can, will do
some thing about the soil erosion prob-
lem in the district, not only on the
main transport routes, but also in the
bustees. Our people need this help more
than many other aids or reforms. It is
not in our power to slem the violence
of a monsoon downpour, but, we
< can reduce the devastations caused to
a minimum. Faith is our Deities and
offering to them alone will not help us.
God helps only thosewho help themselves.
