FOOTBALL TOURNAMENTS AT DARJEELING

( From Our Special Representative )

Darjeeling, August 7

The football tourna-
ments organised by the
Darjeeling and District
Athletic Association, came
to conclusion on the 2nd
August, li>53. The two
finals between Goethals
School and Sukiapokhri
School for the Bhandari
Shield and St. Joseph’s
College ‘A’ and the Bihar
Regiment for the Horlihy
Cup were the main fea-
ture of the day. A en-
thusiastic crowd of about
ten thousand watched
with keen interest the
contesting game particu-
larly beween St. Jeseph’s
College A’ and Bihar Regi-
ment the former winning
by 2 goals, this game
produced a high standard
of football and people
went home very pleased.
The function was presided
over by Shri S Dutt
Mazumdar, Deputy Commi-
ssioner, Darjeeling, and
Sbiimati Dutt Mazumdar
gave away the trophies
to the winning teams.

Mr. W.A. Johns, Hony.
Secretary of the Associa-
tion in his neat little
speech welcomed the addi-
tion of the Malla Shield
presented byShrimati Dev.
Kumari Malla in memory
of her late husband, and

said that with this addition
four tournaments were run
He said that out of the
3 Charity Matches held
this season, one was ear-
marked for the gallant
Sherpas of all expeditions.
He thanked the Military
personal for participating
in all the tournaments
which has shown to the
people how thrilling and
purposeful can the game
of football be, if played
in the right spirit and
that they have thereby
given a great impetus to
local football. Lastly he
thanked, the Military, and
the various schools for
the loan of their grounds,
and to the refrees and to
all those that helped to
make the football season
a great success.

Shri S. Dutt Mazum-
dar in few words thanked
the Association for having
organised the tournaments
which he said were very
well run. He also thanked
the participating teams in
the different tournaments
and for their high standard
of sportmanship.

Tow special medals
were given this year-one
for the most outstanding
player in all tournaments
which went to L/Naik
