‘TIGER’ RETURNS HOME

CIVIC RECEPTION TO TENZING

Friday the 7th August, 1953.

Decorated with gates bearing wel-
coming words in English & -Nepali Dar-
jeeling was en fete to receive the *Hero
of the Himalayas'. From early morning
crowds of excited people were seen all
over the town in pre-
paredness to receive
the “ Tiger of the
Snows. ”

Nepal Tara Tenzing
arrived at ‘ Itose
Bank’ in the town
of Darjeeling at about
5-30 p m. There was
a very vast gathering
to welcome him and
tumultous shouto of
joy and congratula-
tion broke out when
he got off the jeep
that carried him.

Here he was met by
the Vice Chairman of
the Darjeeling Municipality
and Members of the Reception Committee and
was escorted to a especially decorated jeep.

A mile-long procession then followed with
the Everest hero standing on the jeep with folded
hands and acknowledging the spontaneous greeting
of the crowd with his usual and unfailing smile.
From Rose Bank to the Ciub Motor Stand,
thousands of people on either side of the road
stood in eager expectation to welcome home the
conquering hero.

From the Club Motor Stand he was taken
to his house at Toongsoong Busty in another
especially decorated rickshaw pulled by his numerous
admirers. School children from all the local

institutions were eager spectators wildly cheering
him as the jeep carrying him passedby .

CIVIC RECEPTION

Saturday the 8th August, was a red-letter
dav for Darjeeling and its residents. The Civic
Reception on behalf of the Darjeeling Municipality,
the District Board and the Tenzing Reception

Committee was scheduled
to be held at II a. m.
at the spacious Darjee-
ling Municipal Market
Square.

From early morning
streams of people—young
and old -started pouring
in tho square. By 10
a.m. there was hardly any
space left for people to
allow even standing acco-
mmodation. On a very
modest estimate more than
10,000 people had already
assembled.

Punctually at 11 a.m.
Tenzing accompanied by
his wife and two daugh-
ters arrived at the Main
Gate, where they were
received by Shri S. Eutt Mazumdar, Deputy
Commissioner, Darjeeling and from where they
were escorted to the dies.

At the dais Mr. Dutt Mazumdar introduced
Sri Tenzing to Shri R. N. Sinha, Vice Chairman,
Darjeeling Municipality and Shri K. S. Prasad and
Shri P. M. Prodhsn, 1st and 2nd Vice Chairman of
the District Board. They in their turn introduced
the Commissioners of the Municipality and Mem-
bers of the District Board to the honoured guest.
Addresses of welcome were then presented by the
three Vice Chairman as also by the Chairman of
the Reception Committee.
