15000 PEOPLE WELCOME EVEREST HERO TENZING

AT KALIMPONG

Kalimpong,

St. Augustin's Band, Sri Nar Bahadur Gturung,

M. L.A. and other members of the Tenzing Recep-

tion Committee, Kalimpong received Nepal Tara
Sri Tenzing Norgay as he reached the 7th mile
post on Teesta Kalimpong Road. Sri Tenzing
was accompanied by his wife, daughters and
his secretary Sii Lakpa Tsering Shcrpa. The first
garlanding over, the Everest Kero was taken in a
procession to the local Himalayan Hotel where
Mrs. A. Parry and other members of the Hotel
greeted and welcomed the party who stayed there
for lunch. •

At 1 p.m. Nepal Pratap Bardhak Tenzing was
taken round the main streets of Kalimpong in a
oar procession. ' Tenzing, wearing all his decora-
tions, stood with folded hands on the. open jeep
as he. passed the cheering crowd lined on. either
side of the streets.

The procession of surging heads reached Gandhi
Gate at J.15 .where Lama Band greeted him.
Later he was lead to* the beautifully 'decorated
Nehru Panda! from where Sri Tending, l.n wife
and two daughters waved greetings to., the assembled
people. The Mela Ground looked colouvfjil “with,
more than fifteen thousand people yf different'
comn unities who applauded tlioir. hero -as he
waved fiom the balcony of thd Vandal.

and sung by S.U.M. College and School students
preceded introduction of Tenzing by Sri T. R
Sliarma. Head Master, Town School, Kalimpong.
Then on behalf of the- Reception Committee,'’ Dr

N. N. Boral and Sri T. N.. SheVpa garlanded
and offered khada to Nepal Tara Tenzing Norgey,

‘Scores of Khadas oj^d garlands obscured Tenzing's-
vision and his Secretary had busy time removing
t hem from bis neck as people went on garlanding.
A beautiful fire screen was presented to Sri
Tenzing by the reception committee*. A big size
painting of Mahatma Gandhi by Sri Chandra Gupta
was also presented to Sri Tenzing. Sri Madan
Kumar Pradhan, Vice-Chairman of the Kalimpong
Municipality read out the address in Nepali which
was presented in the fashion of a Tibetan Scroll.

Printed on silk by the Himalayan Printing Works
Kalimpong * and made into scroll by the local
Arts & Crafts, the address was rolled in a silver end
rod designed by Sangcot- Visharad Sri 'P: M. Sahu.

Replying to the address Sri Tending said that
he was over.vholmed with joy-at seeing the gathering
assembled to greet and welcome,him. Barring the
'thirteen mile long crowd that, assembled to greet
• him in Nepal this meeting of Kalimpong was
second to none;,, said Sri Tenzing to our repre-
sentative this evening. In Nepali Sri Tenzing
described the last .phase, of his, climb and said that
courage and- determination could achieve any thing
and although, he continued-to. say, Hillary ami
he wore successful in- climbing the coveted, height
it could be, done by othors too provided, the
right type’ of courage- • ditermination. and team
•work were forthcoming-. -

.Vote of. thanks' was proposed by Reception
Committee Secretary Sri Madan Mohan Mintry and
'thereafter was sung the closing song and the
National Anthem in which the whole gathering
«took . part standing-

Later , Sri Tenzing witnessed the .finals of t|ie .
Junior Foot Ball and the Independence Day Shield
mate lies: Before the start of the Independence Day
Shield Finals Dr. N. N. Bor’al, Secretary, Kalimpong
Foot Ball Association took Sri Tenzing to the
centre line where, players of XYZ. Homes XI &
the ReFerec were introduced to him.

Sri Tenzing was pleased to present the trophies
and medals to the winners and the runners up.
In the evening Sri Tenzing was prc>ont at a tea
l>v the- Kalimpong Football Association.

Sri Nar Bahadur Gurung, M L.A. and Sri
Madan Mohan Mintry Chairman and Secretary
respectively of the Tenzing Reception Committe,
Kalimpong- did every thing possible to make the
programme a grand success that it was and they
told our represent itive that they were thankful to
all members of the reception committee and the
general public for the warm support they gave them,
in organising the function.
