new flat at Gandhi Road,
whereto he has recently
shifted, nicely laid out all
his Everest equipment and
presents in a separate
room for exhibiting to the
visitors who are coming
to meet him in large

numbers, every day.

Tenzing is

giving his

ing letters

that have

piled

tip hi the last three months.
He is also attending va-
rious receptions and social-
functions in and around'
Darjeeling.

It is reported that ninny
invitations frotp different
corners of the country as
as well as from foreign
lands are coming to Sri
Tenzing. But ly\ ic. is.
stated cannot immediately,
accept 'nor is! he now in
position to decide Upon
any of his future climb-
ing plans till the proposed.
Mountaineering Institute
here could be given a right
start.

Minister, West Bengal is
talcing keen interest in

lished soon and as amatter
of fact he has specially
deputed Sri T. Wangdi,
Deputy Minister Tribal
Welfare to come to Dar-
jeeling and get prepared
a concrete plan and esti-
mate for the Institute.

It is learnt, that alpng
wilh the Mountaineering
Institute a chain of Youth
Hostels at different alti-
tudes over the surrounding
mountain range will be
set up to instil .into the
hearts of the youth
of the country the
spirit uf mountains and-
love for nature.

vote of 37’ to 22 over
Prince Wan Waithayakon
of Thailand, the only other
candidate

presidential chair to warm
and prolonged applause.

RECRUITMENT OF
GURKHAS
New Delhi, Sept. 10.

The facilities afforded
to British Government by
the Government, of India
for recruitment of Gilr-
kha soldiers to the British
army formed the subject
of a series of interpella-
tions once again in the
House of" the people yes-
terday.

Mr. Nehru said in reply
to Dr. R. S. Singh dhat.
according to the tripartite
agreement the Indian army
was to have battalions
and the number of Gurkha
units employed in the U.
K. army were reduced, and
brought down to a peace-
time strength of eight'
battalions.

All the Gurkhas recruitr-
ed to Indian army, said'
Mr. Nehru were entirely *
recruited, on the Indian
. soil and normally they
- were Indian nationals.

Asked what facilities the
British continued to .enjoy
in India in regard to ree- -
. ruitment, of Gurkhas sol-
diers The.Prime Minister
said. “None for recruit-
ment but they have some
transit facilities as civi-
lians.”

The election for the
Presidency was conducted
by secret ballot, .the dele-
gates filling by tlie ballot
box in alphabetical order.
