THOUGHT FOR TODAY

The most virtuous of all men, says Plato, is he that contents
h:mself with being virtuous without seeking to appear so.

CRUSADE AGAINST T. B.

Deaths due to tuber-
culosis are mere accidents.
Appendicits, strangulated
hernia and such other
surgical Complaints kill
* suddenly as their approach
is not always s gnalled
before arrival. But tuber-
culosis which is said to
kill one person per minute
in Tndia oo'mes, not sud-
denly, but slowly In other
words tuberculosis is an
outcome of . factors that
can be anticipated and re-
moved Hence death duo
to tuberculosis in a scien-
tifically advanced world
is a challenge to humanity.
Tuberculosis is a diesase
of poverty. Bad food, un-
healthy surroundings, over-
worked bodies are the
primary causes. The ad-
vance -towards urbaniza-
tion1 with all its attendant
factors of smoke, dust and
■ infection has accelerated
death by this scouroge.

Mass X-ray. B CG. cam-
paign and a greater aware-
ness .of needB of open air
and nourishing food have
stemmed the tide of tu-

berculosis in a small sector
of population. Tts preven-
tion in some other sectors
of the nation’s life has
not been possible for lack
of adequate means. As
Rajkumari Amrit Knur
remarked in her broadcast
while inaugurating the
T B. seal campaign, the
country has only 20 000
beds for the T B affected
while the need is for I wo
and a half million. That
only applies to the need
of those who are affected
butitisequally urgent that
the unsullied should not
acquire a spot or cavity
in the lungs. The B.C G.
visualises this aspect
Rajkumari Amrit Knur
is anxious to start occu-
pational therapy because
she feels that months of
prostration on the bed
cause a psvcologica! bar-
ricade against cure. But
this also calls for more
funds The T. B. seal
campaign inaugurated on
October 2 is not a com-
plete answer to the prob-
lem. Its importance lies

in two respects. It reminds
the p' ople about the need
for all-out help for the
tuberculosis patients and
it tries to pool very small
contributions, possible for
the humblest citizens of
India, for a noble cause.
By purchasing a T B seal,
a cit.zen of India will be
actually joining a crusade—
a crusade for a great
cause.

HIRTII COM liOr,

His Holiness the Pope
has once again declared
his emphatic condemna-
tion of artificial means
of birth control. Man has
no right to take away
what, he has not the power
to give. Life is God’s.
Killing life in its embryo
is no less a crime against
God and Man. That was
why Gandhiji always in-
sisted on biahmaclwrya as
an effective check to over-
population. The Pope
suggests migration to un-
derdeveloped or undevelo-
ped regions. Australia and
New Zealand are mostly
undeveloped. But they
would not allow Asiatics
to get anywhere near
although the two coun-
tries are Asiatic.
