TELE-PRINTER AT DARJEELING

Darjeeling, October 12

Dr. H. C. Mookerjee,
Governor of West Bengal
presided over the opening
ceremony of the installa-
tion of Tele-printer at
the Telegraph Office, Dar-
jeeling, Srimati Mookerjee
performed the opening of
dole-printer. Tri I a g
Jivan Ram, Minister for
Communications, Govern-
ment of India was also
present on the occasion.

The first message to
be sent through the Tele-
printer was that of the
Governor of West Bengal
to. tho President of India
which read "My respect-
ful greetings to you being
the first message to be
'disuatclied after installa-
tion ceremony by me.”

In his short speech,
Dr. Mookerjee requested
the Communications Minis-
ter to impresa on the
Government the necessity
'of a bridge which could
facillitate the journey from
Calcutta to Darjeeling.
The Governor also eluci-
dated the progress made
by the- country- after- the
achievement' of Indepen-
dence. . He said' that even
the ’ foreigners wiki had at
one-, time anticipated the
collapse of India after the
withdrawal: of the British
were- surprised at -the

capacity of the leaders of
the National Government
who not only maintained
ably everything good they
left behind but also made
marvellous progress within
such a short period in
many directions. He added
that the Press failed in
their duties to inform the
public of the progress
achieved by the Govern-
ment inspite of their
limited resources and that
he thought it was a tra-
gedy for our country-men
to say that the Govern-
'ment was failing It was
nothing but ignorance
was the cause of such
wrongful accusation against
our leaders,

Sri Jagjivan Ram also
speaking on the occasion
explained about the achie-
vements made by the
Government for giving
facilities to the public by
opening a number of Post
and Telegraph Offices in
rural and urban areas.
He said that{ a village
nr villages having a popu-
lation of 2000 persons
would be provided with
a Post Offiice in that
area. He also impress-d
upon the members of the
Post and Telegraph Depart-
ment that they were the
servants of the public and

site. During his stay there
he will also visit the va-
rious schools in the region.
He is expected to submit
his recommendations cover-
ing various aspects of the
scheme in a month’s time.

All . the State Govern-
ments, it is learnt, will he
invited to take part in
the implementation oi the
scheme, which is being
taken up on the initiative
of the West Bengal and
Central Governments.

The capital expenditure
on the scheme is estimated
at Rs. 6,00 000 and the re-
curring annul expenditure
at Rs. 50,000.

Attached to the proposed
school will he residential
buildings for the instruc-
tors and students. There
will also he a library and
a museum. Tenzing Norkey
is to be the Chief Instruc-
tor.

The students of the pro
posed school will, it is
learnt, include military per
sonnel and members of
the NCC.
