ADULTERATION OF FOOD

The “progressive dete-
rioration” in the health
and nutritional stmdards
of the diet of the bulk
of the population of the
country, according to Dr.
V. N. Patwardhan at the
All-India nutritional con-
ference, should be a matter
of deep' concern to the
nation, and also to Govern-
ment—the custodians of
public health. Adultera-
tion of food is a growing
menace which has gone
“mostly utinoticed” by the
powers that be. With
weak and emaciated peo-
ple, the country cannot
he expected to make big
strides in any field Adul-
teration of' food is assum-
ing alarming proportions.
Government’s legislative
measures have not been
able to check this source
of ruin of the health of
the people., most of whom
Cannpt afford even full diet.
\Vant of; adequate deter-
rents in the .'form of heavy
punishments may well be
responsible for the un-
checked continuance of the
evil. The Central Health
Minister’s bill for the pre-
vention of food adultera-
tion is before Parliament.

Tt remains to be seen how
it would be enforced to
advantage.
