REPUBLIC DAY CELEBRATIONS IN
DARJEELING ■

Darjeeling, January 26

the beautiful town of
Darjeeling celebrated the
Republic Day today in a
befitting manner. At suu-
ri<ie National Flags were
hoisted at the Tower of
the To vn Hall and on all
(Government and private
buildings. Small flags were
also flown over private
cars, busts and other
transport.

sioner. Darjeeling took the
salute at the Republic
Pay Police l'arade held

witness the celebrations. ■

ponsibility of maintaining

country rested on them.

Sri I. Sundas, District
Publicity Officer, Darjee-
ling translated the speech
in Nepali.

On this occasion, the
Deputy Commissioner also
presented National Savings
Certificates to the 18 Sher-
pas who accompanied the
the success-ful 1953 Everest
Expedition and climbed
up' to the South Co!.,
The value of each Nafjo-
nal Savings Oertifieat was
Rs. 345'- and these were
purchased out of the sum,
a little above six thou-
sand rupees raised by "The
Statesman" f ir - Sherpa
Fund. •

After observing two mi-
nutes' silence at 12 noon,
Hill folk Dapces were given
by the local people and
the huge gatheiing enjoy-
ed them throughly. , .

DOUBLE AWARDS TO

EVEREST SHERPAS

. An. important ceremony
was witnessed this after
noon by . a distinguished
gathering. Twb groups of
• awards were made by Mr.
••CIS. J. Crawford, Preai;
dent of the Himalayan
Club- to eleven Sherpas for
conspicuous service and
loyalty to mountaineering
«jpeditions during the
season of 1952 and 1953.

First Mr. Crawford pre-
sented nine Coronation
Medals, awarded by Queen
Elizabeth and specially
inscribed with the words
"Mount , Everest Expedi-
tion.'' The nine recipients
were : Dai Namgyal, Dawa
Thondup, Ang Temba,
Thondu Pesang Dawa. Ang
D.iw.» II, Nawang Gorhbu
and Ang Namgyal.
