■ Kalimpong, Jumt 20t 1954
SPORTS

In "the !ast*iManila Sports m«et India has
MCUT-ld K very honouratdf posiiion'and several new

, records hava been eHtabli.shfd. This and the pre-
sent Bpo ti record* of India point to the improve-
ment in the Held of snorts in India. Now the
national government of the country is also co-
operating and undoubtedly the standard of sports
in India, though still much below the world

. standard, it showing marked 'progress every day.
In order to popularise sporta, associations are
being organised even in villages and it is sad to
find that Kalimpong with as many as five large
educational institutions has none of the kind. In
December every year sport meets are oiganised
by aome schools here for their own students but
these ara conducted on old lines. Modern sport-
ing itama do not find any place in these and
the records also are not published for general
information.

We would like to draw the attention of the
•porta loving people of Kalimpong to organise a
worth-while sports association which should include
all the educational institutions and the people
insterestcd in sports. The immediate concern of the
Association would be to organise occasional inter,
institution sports, both for boys and girls for
whicb suitable trophies should be locally arranged.
This would give opportunities to hundreds of hill
boya and girla to establish new records in several
sport events. Hill people are known the world over
for their stamina, made patent by the crowning
victory of Tenzing^ aud there is no reason , why
we should dony to our yongflters" opportunities
in fields where they can prove their superiority
and bring laurels to their mother land.
