CHARCOAL SCARCITY

(From Our Special Representative)

Darjeeling, Dee. 26
Charcoal appears to
be in scarcity in Darjee
ling. This is * revealed
from the fact that large
queues of all class of men,
women and children
are seen lined up every-
day at the charcoal shops.
Winter compels these poo-"
pie to leave their homes
in the early hours of the
morning to find a favoura-
ble place in the queue,
to get some charcoal, but
the last ones of the row
can be sure of returing
home disappointed.

It is leant that a
procession marched to the
residence of the Deputy
Commissioner, Darjeeling
& oftheSupdt. of Police,
demanding fair supply of
charcoal. The Deputy
Commissioner having taken
action, the position eased
for a while, but the same
old trouble is being re-
peated now. It is also
learnt that the authori-
ties were moved for esta-
blishing a fair price Char-
coal shop to prevent the
present scramble for it
but no action has been
taken so far._

of whioh the valuation is
made, and by such other
proceedings as are allowed
by law.

Kalimpong Municipality.

COURTSEY WEEK OBSERVED
BY POST, TELEGRAP a TELE-
PHONE SERVICES

(From Our Special Representative)

^Darjeeling, Dec. 26

ThV. courtsey week
of the Postal, Telegraphio
and Telephone Depart-
ments was observed here
last week. The invited
visitors were requested by
- the authorities to place
their suggestions for bet-
ter functioning of the
department.

Sri R. N. Agarwala,
President' of the Darjre-
ling Traders' Association,
who was one of the visi-
tors, has suggested to the
authorities that the follow-
ing timings should be
fixed for clearance of
mails:

10-15 a. m. for 1st
clearance (air mail)

12-0 a. m. for heavy
packets etc. (by Kail)

3-30 p. m. for Rail &
Air all types

It is reliably learnt
, that the suggestion has
been accepted & the above
new timings of, clearance
will come into effect from
the 1st January, 1956.

Shri Agarwala also
visited the Darjeeling Tele-
phone Exohang & he re-
ports that tit* working of
this Exchange is satisfac-
tory. He suggested that
since trade was growing
rapidly, the Darjeeling
Exchange & the neigh-
bouring sub exchanges
require wide expansion.
