BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS OF DALAI
LAMA
Darjeeling, June 14
The Bhutia commu-
nity of Darjeeling cele-
brated the 22nd Birthday
anniversary of Hie Holi-
ness the Dalai Lama, the
spiritual and temporal head
of Tibet on 13 6 56. A
grand procession was taken
out in the morning at
9 a. rri which went round
the town with Lama bands
accompanied by general
public in their colourfull
Tibetan costumes. After
going round ti e town the
p: occasion reaohed the
Observatory Hill where
religious hymn* were chan-
ted by the Lamas The
Observatory hill was pac-
ked to the capacity by
the people who were all
in joyous mood. After
performing the pujah the
procession with the port-
rait of His Holiness the
Dalai Lama decorated in
a beautifull stand started
back for the towu. and
Inter terminated at Tashi
Chen Seding Kidu Hall.

here and offered scarves
to His Holiness's picture.

for longlife of the Great
Lama.
DEPUTY MINISTER'S
HOUSE BURGLED
A revolver, a camera
and a ring were stated
to have been stolen from
the house in Lower Cir-
cular Road, Calcutta, of
Mr. T. Wangdi, Deputy
Minister for Tribal Welfare,
West Bengal on Wed-
nesday afternoon The
thief broke open the look
of his flat on the third
floor of the building when
Mr. Wangdi was in his
office in Writer*' Building.
DEATH SENTENCE
TO DHANBIR
Darjeeling, June 14
The District and Ses-
sions Judge convicted
Dhanbir oubba of a
charge of murder and
sentenced him to death
on 8tb June, 1956.
This is stated to be the
first imposition of the
death penalty in the
district after more than
20 years. The sentence
is subject to ^confirma-
tion by Calcutta High
Court.
The prosecution stated
that on Tika celebra-
tion day, last October,
Dhanbir, a motor driver
under the Forest Depart-
ment at Kalimpong, made
a fatal and unprovoked
attack on Bhimbahadur
Darji, as the latter was
returning home with his
family after celebrating
Tika at the house of a
friend.
