THEFT IN RAILWAYS

Sir, I am submitting
the following faots for
publication in your paper :

While coming back
from Caloutta on tbe 19th
inst. I was alone in a
2nd class carriage for
ladies between Manibari-
gbat and Siliguri. At Ka-
tihar Station, the door
was opened from outside
by a mob of men who
threw me down on the
platform. Being physically
strong, I was able to
fight and to get back
into the wagon. I called
a railway officer and
pointed out to him that
the carriage was unsafe,
mostly for night journey-
as the window of tho
door was broken. Before
the train started from tbe
station four men were
banging outside the carri-
age, two on each side.
1 called the officer again
who asked them to get
down.' But as he went
away they again hung
themselves on the carriage.
Then I watched tbe man
seen to disappear, For
half an hour it was nor-
mal. Against my will I
started to doze. When I
woke up my leather bag
containing my passport,
my diplomas from Paris
University, all my money,
my camera, all my clothes

religious objects etc...had
been stolen. Another bag
had been opaned, half of
the goods stolen and the
rest scattered on the seat.

I am let without
money, without clothes.
All that I possessed on
the earth-excepting my
books, have been stolen.
As a Buddhist nun, I
have no income but re-
ligious gifts and a very
small remuneration' for
Research works. I hold
the North Eastern Rail-
ways fully responsible for
the facts as no safety
had been given to me
due to the rotten state
of the carriage and be-
cause no help had been
given to me when I called
for it. The total loss is
nearly Rs. 3500/-. I re-
ported it to tbe Railway
Police, who told me tbat
I cannot make a case
against the Railways.
Moreover Railways should
be held as guilty accord-
ing to the Regulations of
Railways and not accord-
ing to tbe Law. Under-
standing that my case is
hopeless, 1 have nothing
to do but to undertake
hunger-strike till the Rail-
ways give me a satis-
factory indemnity for the
loss of my goods and the
violenoes on my persons.

I ask for justice, So I
shall starve till I am
satisfied. Yours etc. Mies
D. Delannoy, French
Buddhist nun.
