ELECTRICITY IN DA RJEELIN6

( Continued from page 5 )

ployment, atleast partial-
ly. It was therefore essen-
tial tbat the Municipality
was allowed to proceed
with its own hydro olec-
trio scheme. Govt, could
help substantially by sanc-
tioning the scheme and
providing funds for its
implementation

The main problem
now faced by the Muni-
pality, he sard, is how to
carry on till the expec-
ted power supply was
actually received. Consi-
derable difficulty is being
felt to maintain satisfac-
tory supply not to speak
of meeting the increased
demand for power. During
the winter months the
water in the flumes is
not sufficient to enable
the generating station to
generate to its full capa-
city with full voltage.
The supply though lately
augumented by diesel
power has not been able
to overcome the power
shortage and during peak
load hours all the gene-
rators have to run with-
out a spare, and in the
event of any of the
machines breaking down,
the whole supply position
gets upset and the main-
tenance of proper voltage
becomes an almost im-
possible ' task. Most of the
machineries too are old
and obsolete. Spare part
replacements are not easily

available Some machines
wore on their last legs,
and in the event of a
complete breakdown — it
would mean a major cala
mity.

The only feasible
measure for atleant tem-
porarily augumenting the
supply position. lit is felt,
is the installation of ano
ther diesel generator aB a
short ^erm policy till the
promised power is avail-
able from the Jaldacca
Scheme. This would how-
ever increase the genera-
ting costs, /which in turn
would compel the Muni-
cipality to raise its rates.
An equitable increase
even under this head
wtiile not unduly incon-
•viniencing consumers,
might prove economical
to them in long run, in
view of the fact that
under an uniform stan-
dard voltago consumers
would be greatly bene-
fited. Any increase in rates
however must carry with
it the guarantee that volt-
Bge supplied conforms to
the minimum voltage pres-
cribed under the Elec-
tricity Act. If this can
be done, a slight increase
in rates might well be
received with equaminity
by consumers.

DO YOU KNOW ? The population of every country in
Europe, except East Germany, has increased in the
past ten years. EaHt Germany's declining population is
caused by the (light of refugeee—more than two-and-
a-half million—to the West.
