INTERNATIONAL GEOPHYSICAL YEAR
A gigantic all-world project
was launched on July 1 to
unravel a little more of the
mysteries of the earth and the
atmosphere that envelops living
beings In a world of suspicion
and distrust 71 countries, in*
eluding India, have found it
possible to line°up for the study
of the sun and other natural
phenomenons during the next 18
months, when, there will be
innumerable sunBpo I All the
related facts, relevant to the
brandies of the earth science,
will be studied by experts all
over the globe including the
polar regions.
India's role in the Inter"
national Geophysical Year will
bo of considerable importance
and the observa'tories will work
incesaently to study the elec-
trioal properties of the equatorial
high atmosphere. Changes in
the sea would be studied as
also formation of the glaciers.
Thousands of experts will catch
the mysteries of the sky on
ingenious cameras and the scien-
tists will interpret them for
obtaining greater knowledge of
the earth.
.. The importance of the
International Geophysical Year,
the vast global undertaking to
solve a few more riddles to
■help man live better, would
begin to be appreciated and
understood in the next one
and halfyeara. In a country
where the furrowed browe of
the farmer's face record his
anxiety to understand moody
Nature the value of these stu-
dies would be tremendous. But
the essentially spiritual ap-
proach to the problem of hu-
man existence in the pattern
that contains the sun, the
moon, the stars, the wind and
the water will never be discar-
ded by the philosophic Indian
mind

The Eighth Vanama-
hotsava surted in Kalini-
pong with planting of sap-
lings at the Janata College
premises, on the tst July
'57 by Shri S. S. Varma,
I.A.S. Subdivisional Officer,
Kalimpong. In a meeting
held on the occassion there,
Shri Varma and other spea-
kers stressed the impor-
tance of tree planting in
our country specially in
the hills. On the same
day, ceremonial planting
was also done at Pe.'.ong
airm'st a large number of
villagers. The students of
St. George's iigh School,
Pedong siaged a one act
play depicting the signifi-
cance of the Vanamahot-
