kalale stream whioh would
enable its waters also to
be used for power gene-
ration. There will be
provision for the ultimate
installation of 10 genera-
ting units supplied by
psnstooks, S ft. in dia-
meter and about 4,300 ft.
long, laid overground. The
oapaoity of eaoh machine
will be 89,000 kW. Two
such units will be installed
in the first stage..
Eleotricity from the
new power station wiU
be transmitted over, a
double oircuit 220 kV
transmission line to Shi-
moga, a distance of 68
miles where this station
will be oonneoted to the
existing 110 kV grid of
the Mysore system From
Shimoga, power will be
transmitted to Bai galore,
one of the most important
load centres, a distance
of 170 miles, over a 220
kV transmission line.
According to present
estimates, . the cost ' of
power after the final stage
of Sharavathy is reached
will be the cheapest in
the oountry.
Foreign Exchange
Out of the estimated
cost of Rs. 312 crores
for the stage now under
execution, the foreign ex-
change needed will'. be a
minor fraotion. Expendi-
ture on penstocks, gene-.
rating plant, sub-station,
equipment and other trans-
mission material to be
imported will be of the
order of Ra. 6.84 crores.
The project construe-
tion whioh was formally
inaugurated by Shri S. K.
Patil, Union Minister for
Irrigation and Power, in
early February, has already
oovered a good part of
the preliminary works.
The Linganmakki dam
site, located in the heart
of the jungle, has been
oleared and made approa^
ohable by a good road,
and forests have been
oleared on both the flanks
of the dam site. ,
Similarly . the jungle'
has been cleared at the
'lalakalale dam site and
exploratory trenches and
trial pits have been exca-
vated.

for generators and turbi-
nes, transformers, switch
and control gear are being
finalised.
The work completed
up to November last year
has cost about Rs. 1.05
crores against a revised
budget provision of Rs.
1.50 crores far 1957-58.
An expenditure of Rs. 3
orores has been estimated
for 1958-59.
The first unit of the
new Sharavathy soheme
is expected to be commis-
sioned in 1961-62 and
both the units of the
first stage in 1962. With
the completion of' this
stage, the projeot will
have an installed capacity
of 178,200 kW.
