Seeds Multiplication Centres to be Started Soon

(From Our SpeeioJ Representative)
Darjeeling, May 21

For the put fortnight
the Darjoeling fol grape.
Office is daily receiving
and sending hundreds of
telegram* by post. As
these include Express
telegrams and money
ordera which are apt to
reach their destinations
after a lapse of some
days, the inoonvinience
and worry caused to these
involved may well be
imagined. It is unfortu-
nate that the authorities
are making hardly any
effort to restore the tele-
printer channel and it is
apprehended that the tele-
: raphio delays may con

The agricultural ' de-
velopment of Darjeeling
District was still unable
to mitigate the economic
difficulties of farmers
according to Dr. R. Ahmed
the Stat- Agriculturn Mi-
nister.' The most pressing
problem was the eompari-
lively poor yield in tbe
hill areas. As extensive
farming was impossible
emphasis had naturally
to be put on intensive

farming be said. The Go-
vernment bad therefore
decided to introduce seed
multiplication oentres in
various thanas for t h <
distribution of quality*
seed to farmers of the
area.

There was a proposal
also to introdu.ee at cer-
tain important centres,
schemes for cheese and
butter making. The Go-
vernment would also en-
courage a oo operative
marketing - centre * to sell
these produce. 1

As piggery produce
had great potential mar-
kets in Calcutta and other
oentres the Govt, would
soon inaugurate pilot
schemes for piggeries at
Kalimpdng and Takdab,
while euglish breed pigs
would . be distributed
among the tribals.
