CHITTARAN JAN

(Continued from page 6)
be possible fer the Works
to be entirely self-sum.
oient in regard to imported
items.

Side by side with the
stepping up of produotion
due consideration has been
paid to workshop expan-
sion. It is proposed to
spend Rs. 2 3 orore under
various expansion schemes
comprising of additional
machinery, extension of
existing covered area of
certain sections of the
Works as well as more
Tesidenti&l accommodation
and other amenities for
the staff. Works costing
nearly Rs 7 lakh have
been completed. Building
materials, worth Rs. 15
lakh have already been
collected and much has
been done to stabilise
production at ao accelera-
ted pace.

Massive structures and
giant machines cannot by
themselves turn out loco-
matives if the men who
work those machines are
not happy and contented
and do not contribute
their very best. 1 run to
the ideals of a welfare
State, considerable thought
has been given and is
still being given at Chitta-
ranjan to the comforts
and well-being of the
workers and their families.

Nioe little self-contai-
ned houses with all mo-

dern amenities to live in,
big institutes to meet
their recreational needs,
well-staffed educational
institutions for imparting
eduoation to th ir ehildren
and wards, free dispen-
saries and a modern hos-
pital to take oare of the
health of the workers and
their families—these are
some of the facilities which
have been provided at
Cbittaranjan to make the
life of the workers—the
real partners in the in-
dustry— happy, peaceful
and oare free.

Housing and Education
s Efforts have been
made at Chittaianjan to
provide residential accom-
modation to as many
employees as possible.
Five thousand and seventy-
eight quarters were buih
in the initial stage to
which another 1,000 would
be added during th« Se-
cond Plan period. It
would be no exaggeration
to say that living around
scenio beauty the workers
of Chittarnnjan enjoy all
the modern amenities of
a oity life.

Though eduoation is
primarily a State Govern-
ment responsibility no less
than two high schools
(one for boys and one for
girls) and seven basic
schools are being run by
the administration To
these have been i added
four private sohools, two
oonvents, and three West

Bengal Government basic
sohools opened last year.

The Seoond Five Year
Plan has laid considera-
ble stress on the need of
extending the scope of
educational facilities to
the children of railway
employees. Opening of
new primary and second-
ary sohools, award of
scholarships to employees'
children for prosecution
of studies in scientific,
medioal and other techni-
cal subjeots have opened
up new vistas - -

Ihe construction of
three new buildings to
bouse the three State Go-
vernment schools is being
taken in band at a sanc-
tioned estimate of Rs.
69,000 Proprsals have
also been mooted for the
construction of a few
more bnildings for the
local Area Committee and
Mahila Samity schools
The boys' high school will
soon be equipped, with a
gymnasium.

Commensurate with
the railway Ministry's de-
cision to grant scholar-
ships to railway employees'
children. 21 students would
be given scholarships ran-
ging from Rs, 25 to Rs.
50 per month. This de-
cision has been widely
acclaimed as a signifirant
step towards encouraging
railway men's children in
obtaining advanced techni-
cal education.
