connecting their Bombay-
Trivandrura route. Fur-
ther new "Inland" servi-
ces were started in India
in the years 1937 and 1938.

In November, 1937,
an air passenger and mail
ssrvioe was inaugurated
between Bombay and
Delhi and in November,
1938, a similar service was
inaugurateil between Bom-
bay and ICatbiawar.

In February, 1938,
the "Empire Air Mail
Scheme," by which all
first class mails were
carried by air was inau-
gurated with the Bast-
bound servioe of Imperial
Airways which arrived at
Karaohi on February 27,
1938. Tin iatro luction of
this rapid mail service
compelled the internal
feeder services to make
further improvements in
their own services and
the flights between Kara-
chi and Madras and Ka
racbi and Lahore were
first increased to four
and then to f ve times a
week. "

As a result of Italy's
entry into the war in
June, 1940, the air mail
service to England across
Europe was discountinued
and instead an air-oum-
eurface servioe was intro-
duced.

After the war, tbe
air services once again
slewly resumed their nor-
mal services, both in India

and in foreign countries,
and it was on 8th June,
1948 that the Tatas once
again plaoed India on the
world map as the first
Asian oountry to have
its own foreign air service!

Even tbe Government
of India appreciated tbe
importance of the epic
event by issuing a special
commemorative stamp of
12 annas which was used
for only one day and that
too only on letters carri-d
by thn Air 'India Inter
national plane! In the
year of its inauguration.
All carried 2.690 passen-
gers; last year it carried
over 37 000 ! And the
schedule of flights from
one flight a week has
now jumped to 7 flights
every week.

All now also.runs itB
eervio s to Nairobi and
Japan and by the end of
this moath a new trail
will be blazed by its pi-
lots to Moscow, Russia.
A truly amazing feat in
a decade of progress and
above all . with security
and service —S. S.
