The inclusion of Fa-
rakka Barrage in the 2nd
Five Year Plan was strong-
ly voiced at the Congress
Politioal Conference at
Calcutta. Dr. B. C. Roy
hai been fighting all along
for this issue. This scheme
when implemented will
mainly benefit North Ben-
gal Sri B. K. Patil, Cen-
tral Minister of Irtigation
& Power also made a
forceful speech in support
of early execution of this
project. On the execu-
tion of thja project de-
pends the future »f West
Bengal and Calcutta port.
This issue has been
raised once again and Or.
Roy should, be given
staunch support by the
people of the State so
that steps may be taken
for an early execution of
the Farakka project.

SIKKIM POLICE FIRE
ON RIOTERS «
Gangtek, July 11
For the first time last
week the Sikkim police
fired to scare away rioters
on the Tibet border when
a clash between two sec-
tions of labourers took
place near Searatbang on
the Nathula Pass, it is
officially learnt here today.
Fifty-two persons aoouied
in this connexion were
brought here yesterday,
about 20 suffering from
minor injuries and two in
a precarious oondition.
It is understood that
a large numher of Tibetans
after creating trouble
among the werkers sneak-
ed back into Tibet before
they could be arrested.
It is further gathered
that the trouble started
when the road builders of
one section of the Nathula
Pass stopped work in
protest against nonpay-
ment of wages by their
sardar and persuaded ano-
ther section of the Sea-
rathung oooly oniony to
take , part in the strike.

by all present.

HOUSING PLANS FOR
BACKWARD CLASSES

Nearly 160,000 houses
are proposed to be built
for Scheduled Castes and
Scheduled 1 ribts during
the second PIhu period.
The housing schemes
to be financed by the
Centre and the States
are to oost about Rs 10
orores, of which Rs. 2.88
crores are earmarked for
Soheduled Tribes, Rs. 5 85
orores for Scheduled Cas-
tes Rs. 85 lakhs for ex-
criminal tribes' and Rs.
48.7 lakhs for other back-
ward classes.
