over to If iss Padmaja Nai-
du the Governor, a purse
lor Rs. 51)01/- being the
first instalment collected
from the people of Darjee-
ling as contribution to the
Jayal Memorial Fund. The
ceremony was followed
by the screening of the
film Nanga Paibat a fac-
tual account of the suc-
cessful Avtstro-German Ex-
pedition of 1963,' photo-
graphed in exquisite co-
lour by Germany's ace
photographer Hans Ertl.

Six Indian Ladies have
undertaken a pioneer trek-
king expedition under
the auspices of the Hima-
layan Mountaineering Ins-
titute. They left Darjee
ling on Ootober 19 and
are expeoted baok soon.
Before their - departure
tbey met Miss Kaidu
the Governor who wished
them good luok. Latest
reports indicate that one

of the party Mrs. Sboray
did not proceed far and
has returned. The other
five, Pem Pern and Nima
Tenzing's two daughters
and his niece Doma, with
Miss Shankhadbar of Ha-
naras and Miss Kothare
of Nagpur are proceeding
satisfactorily.

Under an exohange

programme four Japanese
members of Japan's Junior
Red Cross are teaching
radio making as a oottage
industry to the West lien-
gal nnit Juniors, at the All
India Junior Red Cross
Study Circle now being
held at Kurseong Simi-
larly four members from
the West Bengal unit
will visit Japan early next
year to teach ivory craft
at the International Junior
Red Cross Training Centre.
These reciprocal visits will
continue yearly. Altoge-
ther 192 members from
12 tates are participating
in the present Study Cen-
tre. An All India handi-
crafts exhibition including
exhibits from Denmark.
France and Japan is also
being held aimaltanecusly.

For a few hectio days

Darjeeling pulsated with
happy throngs of visitors
and the glittering array
of various enjoyable funo
tions. Most of these were
in aid of the Jayal Memo
rial Fund for disabled
Sherpas. Quite a sizeable

sum in understood to
have been raised. Among
the many stage obows
the most notable was the
'Mikado' staged by the
North Point Dramatic As.
sociation. Rarely dees
one come across saoh a
fabulous production and
the show natually drew,
packed houses in all its
performances. The Mt.
Hermon staged Agatlm
Christie's 'Mousetrap' suc-
cessfully. "Sherpa Night"
at the Gymkhana Club
was also very Well pa-
tronised. A gentlemen
vs Ladies hookey match
in whioh the gentlemen
were seen to some disad-
vantage in flowing skirts
and other apparel worn
by ladies, ended incoi -
clusively There were
many opinions as to what
was the real score fortu-
nately however nobody
seemed to care.' The bett
goal' of the match was
scored by Singh one of
the forwards of the Gentle
men. who scored a scor-
ching goal against his
own side, and was ohased
by his goal keeper right
round the field for his
effort.

The three schools, St.
Joseph's, the St. Paul's
and the Mt. Hermon held
their annual atheletie
meets - successfully. The
District Sports though
with a new innovation of
having a separate item
