The District Congress
this afternoon h«ld a pub-
lic meeting which was
addressed among others
by Mr. Narbahadur Go-
rung, Mr. Sbtv Kumar Hat,
Mr. I'. Mapaen, M p. Mr.
Arun Moitra, and Mrs.
Maya Devi Ohet'ri, the
District CongresePreaid -nt,
who presided.
The language iasue
featured prominently in
aptechea Mr. Gurung aaid

tion of Nepali sa the
district's official language
In the hill areas Nepali
was fu ictioning as the
medium of instruction in
the primary and second
ary stages and as vern»-

stage.
Mr. Gurung pledged
the party's fullest support
for the recognition of
Nepali as the hill urea's
official language when the
Language Bill is introdu-
ced in the forth.ooming
session of the State legis-
lature.
Other speakers reite-
rated thsir assurance of
cooperation in the struggle
for recognition of Nepali
as the district's official
language They appealed
for a united stand on
this vital issue irrespec-
tive of party affiliations.

A delegation of Tibetan
refugees led jointly by
Jinpa Gyatso of Amdo
Provinoe and Thutbp j
Ghonpq of Kham Provinoe
placed a memorandum '
before Mr Nebru on Sun-
day evening in which they
assured him that .. every
Tibetan.in India was truly
grateful to him for giving
them hospitality and look
ing after their welfare
and comfort and the
safety of the Dalai Lama.
The memorandum
added: "We have to pain
fully apologize for a few
individuals among us in
Kalimpong who have been
unwittingly but cleverly
used by enemy to create
coufusion, dissension and
unhappiness amongst us.
Aided by enemy fuudsf
pamphlets and handbills
are still being printed
and circulated from Ka-
limpong As the local
authorities have so far
done nothing to stop this
obviously dangerous prac-
tice, we a^ain humbly
appeal for Your Excel-
lency's intervention in this
matter."
Mrs. Maya Devi Chettri
stated that the Siliguri
Mandal Congress compo-
sed mainly of plains peo-
ple, would also back the
move for recognition of
Nepali as the hill area's
official language.
