3. The eminences of bones enlarge theb substance, multi-
ply the different points of adhesion for muscles, and augment
their moving power, by removing their attachment from the
centre of motion.

4. Lastly, by the many moveable joints which bones form
we are allowed the. vast extent of power we enjoy .; and frac-
tures, which without them would continually be happening,
are prevented : joints also permit of the great extension which
bones experience during their growth.

When the bones are deprived of their soft parts, and hung
together in their natural situation by means of wire, the
whole is termed an artificial skeleton: but when they are
Kept together by means of their ligaments, it is called a natU'
ral skeleton.
