treatifes on the heft management of cattle, on improvements
in agricultural implements, on the heft models for velfels
employed in the coafting trade, on the advantages of life-
infurances, &c., on the more homely and humble female
achievements of knitting and needlework, as well as for
literature, poetry, and mufic.
But enough of introduction. Again we are within the
walls of the old town. The morning is fine, and hundreds of
people make the ftreets aftir, haftening towards the caftle to be
prefent at the opening of the Eifteddfod. Flags of all colours
and devices are floating from roofs and windows, and foon
after leaving the railway-ftation we are aware of a band of
mufic preceding a long proceflion of men, each wearing in the
left-hand button-hole of his coat three golden ears of corn,
with a bow of different coloured ribbon. Thefe are the com-
mittee, the bards, and the minftrels, and other fupporters of
the Eifteddfod, on their way to the caftle, which they enter
under a triumphal arch of laurels, flags, flowers, and various
devices ; a raifed pathway, formed for the occafion, leading
thence into the caftle. The proceflion and mufic, however,
halt in the caftle-yard, and here, with a good deal of ceremony,
the Eifteddfod is proclaimed and opened with a fomewhat quaint
formula of words ; thus :—
“ The Truth againjl the World.-—In the year one thoufand eight hundred and fixty-
one, the fun approaching the autumnal equinox, in the forenoon of the fourteenth day
of Auguft, after due proclamation, this Gorfedd is opened within the Royal Caftle of
Conway, in Gwynedd, with invitation to all who would repair hither, where no weapon
is unflieathed againft them, and judgment will be pronounced upon all works of genius
fubmitted for adjudication, in the face of the fun and the eye of light.”—The Truth
againjl the World.
