WE have here one of the most delightful and most
characteristic pieces of the primitive School of
Cologne, produced at a moment, when it was
beginning to free itself from the more or less general formulas
of that art, which was called « European or universal». During
that period, which comprised approximately the last quarter
of the 14th. and the first thirty years of the 15th. century,
we shall clearly see the individualisation of the great cur-
rents of technical tendencies and doctrines which were later
to become respectively, in the painting of panels, the French
School, the Dutch School and the Rhine School. :-1——~t-
Under the conventional name of Meister Wilhelm have
been grouped these works of a very sweet and taking mysticism
which, doubtless under the influence of preachers and writers
such as the Dominicans Eckhart (f circa 1327) and Tauler
(f circa 1361), and the Blackfriar Henri de Suso (f circa 1365)
were to develop in such great numbers in that land of the
