; ASTERS IN ART consists of a series of Monographs, issued in
the form of a monthly magazine. Each number, complete in it-
self, adequately and beautifully illustrates and thoroughly de-
scribes and criticises the work and relates the life, of one of the
great Painters of the world. Each issue contains reproductions
of ten paintings by the Master who forms its subject; those paint-
ings being selected which, in the opinion of competent critics, are the most
beautiful and representative—which best manifest the Master’s genius. A
great part of the value of the magazine lies in the superior quality of its plates,
and no pains are spared to make them true “reproductions,” which shall pre-
sent, not alone the aspect, but the beauty, the values, and the artistic “ quality”
of the original paintings. In addition to the ten reproductions of pictures, a
portrait of the artist is given whenever one of authentic value is obtainable.

The text portion of the magazine begins with a life of the artist, — a brief, trust-
worthy, and interesting biography. The greater part of the text consists of
carefully chosen quotations drawn from what the most eminent art critics have
said of its subject. These collected quotations bring to the readers of MAS-
TERS IN ART the fruit of the world’s best judgment, which could not other-
wise be obtained without laborious and wide research. To add to the value of
the magazine as a permanent reference book, a Bibliography, containing the
names of all worthy books and magazine articles referring to its subject,
and a list of the master’s paintings, giving their present locations, are included
in each issue.

It will be seen that to the artist and lover of art the magazine brings yearly one
hundred and twenty adequate reproductions of the most representative master-
pieces. To the student it furnishes an attractive monthly lesson, providing him
with the consensus of the world’s best critical judgment.
