that any distinctive cha-
racteristics or self-assertion
is possible. Students at
Schools of Art such as
those of Birmingham and
Glasgow are now brought
more directly under the
influence of the teachers,
and are impelled to turn to
best account all the freedom
of view that they possess.
They are led to strive to
accentuate and increase
their qualities of observa-
tion and expression rather
than to set aside their
individual preferences in
exchange for a ready-
made system constructed
and provided for them.
