IHrZr Z^aZ/M by Air. Charles Sims, ZZZzagA'
Zea<%?7* ^Z /Zd by Mr. J. C. Dollman,
and Air. Hacker's delightful fantasy, Zg<y ZZ*y?
—all of these are of appreciable value in the
exhibition.
The landscapes are, if anything, more important
than the figure pictures. Mr. East's ZZwzZ^ a
Z?F/*AsZ?7-i? AZaZw is the most attractive of his
contributions; but his nobly decorative ZzZZTW,
his strong colour-note, ZZg Zizr/Z a/C<xM7* Z? Zziw,
and his study in tones of grey, ZXg ZI/w y /Z^
are hardiy less fascinating. Sir E. A.
Waterlow is admirably represented by his
/Z<? ZZa/Z and ZZg Z?a//Z^ a/ /Z^ ZaA^, as well as
by his IFhT-Zztw/Z ZZj/Z; and Air. J. Aumonier
has done nothing more masterly than his expansive
and atmospheric ZZ7*yw*Z.sZ2'7*^ (Z77277M77. Mr.
David Alurray's ZZ<? (Z7-zw// Zv772 nZ/&wZ72^Z'a7*Z

is the most complete of his canvases, but there is
excellent naturalism in his river-meadow subject,
Zu /Z<? CaMM/Ty a/ Ca7?y/aZZ, and in his yaw and
Z*wa7-Z?/aMa/7M. Mr. David Farquharson's IIZZZT*
is one of the great landscapes of the year; and Mr.
La Thangue's ZZazMag- with its harmony of
rich colour; Mr. Edward Stott's ZZ%a, a rural scene
very ably rendered; Mr. George Clausen's ZZjZ,
Mr. Arnesby Brown's ZZ<? Z7ay, Mr.
Joseph Farquharson's IHaZT* Zawa/, Mr. J. Coutts
Michie's ZZvw yi-aa^ /Zg ZZ7Z, and Mr. Yeend
Ling's Z/Z Z7a//^ (Ty?, have sterling qualities
which claim full recognition.
It cannot be denied that the show suffers some-
what this year from the comparative weakness of
Mr. Sargent. Though, as has been already men-
tioned, there are portraits by other men which have
very definite interest, the fact that only one of his
is of first-rate importance is a matter for regret.
However, besides the contributions of Professor
von Herkomer, Air. J. J. Shannon, Sir George
Reid, Mr. G. Spencer Watson, and Mr. C. W.
