presented in black-and-
white reproduction. Two
other interesting books are
the Pocket Crest Book and
the Family Crest Book, the
one consisting of fifteen
hundred geometrical and
conventional designs in
black and white, and the
other seven hundred de-
signs showing the crests
used by old Japanese dai-
mios and families of high
rank.

Robert Reid has com-
pleted four panels, de-
signed for the decoration
of the Boston State House,
and supplementary to the
panel put in position a year
or more ago, which cele-
brated the speech of Otis
on the Bill of Rights. Two
of the new panels are de-
voted to coats of arms and
the other two deal with
Paul Revere’s Ride and the
Boston Tea Party.

A STUDY. BY JEROME CONNER
and it is interesting to note that efforts have been
directed toward the production of a substitute for
flake white by Winsor & Newton, of 88 Fulton
Street, New York. Flake white or white lead, con-
sisting chemically of carbonated lead, is considered
in its combination of body and opacity superior to
all other white pigments. For many years these
manufacturers have been engaged in an attempt to
produce a good quality of white lead which could
be supplied at a more moderate price. They have
now produced a colour which they call the “Win-
ton” white, intended for the use of art students;
artists in general, for sketches and rough studies;
and artists and craftsmen for decorative work on a
large scale. For these purposes the use of the very
finest grades of flake white is by no means essential,
provided that the pigment is of good colour and
works satisfactorily. Although not possessing the
body or exquisite fineness of the best flake white,

We noted last month some new departures in
the preparation of oil colours designed to meet
special requirements. Such improvement in the
preparation of material is of interest to all painters
and craftsmen whose work involves the use of them;

An interesting devel-

opment in reproduction in
colour is the work of the

W. A. Wilde Company.
Their “ Colorgraphs” show
unusual fidelity and represent a distinct achievement
in the attempt to extend the sphere of reproduction
of masterpieces to include the important element of
colour, of which the best carbon prints fail to give ade-
quate suggestion. Among the paintings which have
so far been reproduced are Raphael’s Madonna del
Gran Duca, Madonna of the Chair and St. Cecelia;
Murillo’s St. Antony of Padua, Madonna and Child;
Botticelli’s Coronation of the Virgin, Albertinelli’s
Mary’s Visit to Elizabeth, Andrea del Sarto’s Holy
Family, Plockhorst’s Christ the Consoler, The Good
Shepherd, Repose in Egypt; and the head of Christ
from Hofmann’s Christ and the Rich Young Ruler.
