of rather Aighty temper and dangerously free with
their sledges. For all we know, Matches Mary
may by this time have extended her favour to many
others. And if all the bronze figures of the metropo-
lis are now in the habit of assembling in Madison
Square, let us say, when the city sleeps, they must
already have come to the rueful conclusion that in
spite of the triumphant attention of such masters
as St. Gaudens, the bronze age is passing. The

progressive development in recent years of sculp-
ture as means of decoration, in this city alone, has
been little short of remarkable. It is a long cry
from the grotesque heads that the contractors early
added to the keystone of the arched doorway; but
when the chisel goes in at the door decoration comes
in at the roof. To-day there is hardly a function of
sculpture which has not been successfully revived.
