USEUM NOTES

WE TAKE PLEASURE in presenting to
our readers a photograph of the heroic
bronze statue of one of the Roman
emperors, Caius Vibius Trebonianus Gallus, re-
cently purchased in Paris by the Trustees of the
Metropolitan Museum of New York. The statue,
according to a detailed statement made by Mr.
William M. Laffan, one of the trustees, was dis-
covered in the early years of the last century in exca-
vations in Laterano, broken into several pieces. It
was called arbitrarily CcaMr. After pass-
ing at intervals through various hands, and being
subjected to several blundering attempts at restora-
tion, it was put together by Mr. Andre, who made
the remarkable restoration of the bronze Hermes
from Antikythera. It is held to be one of the finest
extant examples of Roman iconic sculpture.
Gallus, who was possibly of African descent, is
said to have been born on an island of the Syrtis
Minor, toward the end of the second century or
early in the third. It is known that he fought under
Trajanus Decius against the Goths in 251, and

of Art." The plate reproduced herewith is pub-
lished in three states (size 22 by 17 inches), by
Charles E. Goodspeed, of Boston.
The reproduction in colours of George H.
Smillie's painting, Aw A pH/ Day, shown on another
page, is a characteristic example of this well-known
artist's work. Mr. Smillie comes of an artistic
family, and was admitted at an early age to the
National Academy, which he served ten years as
recording secretary. He has traveled widely
through the United States, especially in the moun-
tain regions. His pictures are to be found in many
important collections. He is a member of the
American Water Colour Society and has been its
Treasurer for four years. Among his portraits are
those of the president of the Bank of England and
of Sir Henry Irving, the actor. Mr. Smillie's
younger brother, James D. Smillie, is also a mem-
ber of the National Academy, an etcher and pain-
ter. George Smillie studied under his father and
James M. Hart, N. A., and completed his studies
in France and Italy.
