COLOURED XYLO GRAPHIC PRINT: “ MATERNITY ”
knife begin rubbing on the cardboard with as much
pressure as possible, in the sarae way that monotype
impressions are rubbed, being careful at first to
rub uniformly all over the block, and afterwards

pressing harder over the
solid masses and places
which are required darker
than others. In this way
gradation of tone in the
impression can be ob-
tained. The progress of
the print can be seen by
holding the lower half of
the paper firmly to the
block with the cardboard
under the left hand, and
lifting up the upper por-
tion. If not printed
enough, or if more inking
be required, the part can
be re-inked while the
block is exposed, and
the paper laid down again
and rubbed once more.

because the block itself absorbs a certain amount
of paint, and will not give it off freely upon the
paper until the second or third print. When the
