Artistic Leather Work

Events in the History of Brandenburg” (1836),
“Essays 011 Stone with Brush and Scraper” (1851),
“Essays in Etching” (1844). The thousands of
drawings executed in the second half of his life, not
for publication but for study, are matter-of-fact
records of daily life, noted with astounding sure-
ness in an individual style. The Menzel exhibition
is one of the most important yet arranged by the
Curator of the Print Department, Mr. Frank
Wellenkampf, and will probably be on view for
several months.

nique Necessary to the Painting of Pic-

hurst. Pages 405.

Instruction for Beginners and Amateurs. By

tical and Comprehensive Treatise on the Art
of Painting China and dass with Mineral
Colours. By Mrs. Nicola di Rienzi Mona-
citesi. Pages 286.
Illustrated. i2mo. Boston: Lee & Shepard.
These three most serviceable little books of prac-
tical advice and direction, appearing from the press
of Lee and Shepard, Boston, contain all the hints
and technical Information necessary to the beginner
in oils, water colours or china painting, while at the
same time they supply, from the experience' of their
well qualified authors, the occasional inspiration
and encouragement which those who seek aid in
technical processes from books cannot well afford
to miss. The arrangement of the volumes on oil
and china painting into paragraphs, with running
bold face titles, will prove a convenience for refer-
ence. The illustrations throughout are well chosen,
and in quality sufficient for their purpose. A con-
venient appendix of specimen tints will be found in
each volume, some 150 tints being shown for ceramic
work. Mr. Parkhurst, the author of “The Painter
in Oil,” was formerly lecturer on art in Dickinson
College, and will be remembered for his book,
“Sketching from Nature.” He divides his discus-
sion into remarks on materials, general principles,
technical principles, and practical Application.
Miss Allen approaches her theme more particularly
in relation to the various difficulties presented by the
treatment of different styles of subject. The third
book is perhaps the most direct and categorical, as

the details of ceramic work afford a greater topica
diversitv.
Practical Hints on Painting, Composition,
Landscape and Etching. By Henry F. W.
Ganz. Illustrated. 8vo. Pages xiv, 128. Phila-
delphia: J. B. Lippincott Company.
Air. Ganz, in his “Practical Hints,” supplies the
advice and Suggestion, hung on the frame work of
graded lessons in drawing and painting, that are
ordinarily to be had only in dass. If it is possible
to convey the personal sense of knack, readiness
and aspiration without the contact of personality,
if this mixture of shop talk and confession of
artistic faith that a pupil looks for in his master
can be put into a book, Mr. Ganz has made the
experiment. In twelve preliminary lessons the
author sets the beginner various tasks in drawing
and in painting, with representative illustrations.
Some of the plates showing Mr. Ganz’s work are
from earlier issues of The Studio. While per-
haps a trifte categorical to the reader, this book
should prove a convenient walking stick to many
who Start along the road of painting alone.

Artistic leather work with
OIL DYES
So much of the charm of worked
leather depends upon the material itself
that the products of the various arts employing it
are often somewhat misleading in the pleasure they
afford. This is, of course, a quality of the medium
that the thorough artist well understands and seeks
