Dupre, landscapes by Jacob Maris and Daubigny,
and a cattle piece by Mme. Dieterle. There is also
a woodland scene by Diaz. Among the Dutch
water-colours here brought together there are repre-
sented Weissenbruch, Mesdag, Du Chattel and
others. Two wonderfully handled pastels by Pelle-
tier and Iwill, and some new engravings printed in
colours, of whichwe reproduce Mrs.Payne Galway,
after Sir Joshua Reynolds, will be appreciated.
Mr. Roland Knoedler has returned from
Europe after a successful and entertaining trip, and
bringing with him a number of purchases Araong
his recent acquisitions is a fine example of the work
of George Hitchcock, whose mastery of the effects
of light was the subject of a recent article in The
International Studio. Other examples seen at
the Knoedler Galleries, New York, were of Har-
pignies and Lhermitte. Some paintings and water-
colours by Aston Knight have been shown in an
exhibition just closed. Mr. Knight is the son of
Ridgway Knight, the well-known American figure
painter. The elder Knight’s View on the Seine had
been shown a few weeks earlier. Among the repro-
ductions, whichcontinue to be populär as gifts, there
is a mezzotint after Sir Joshua Reynolds and a num-
ber of old stipples printed in colour, among them
one after George Morland, engraved by J. R. Smith,
Rustic Employment by W. Ward, and Lucy of
Leinster, dated 1788.
An exhibition of Dutch masters held at the
Scott and Fowles Gallery, New York, has afforded
an opportunity to see an exceptionally interesting
collection of the work of this school. The late J. S.
Forbes’s collection in London has been drawn upon
for a number of fine examples. Among these was
Israels’s Sewing School at Katwick. This Mr.
Forbes bought from the artist direct and always
refused to seil. There was also another Israels from
the same collection, In the Surf. Three small
figure pieces and a sombre canvas called At the
Window completed the examples of this master.
Anton Mauve was shown in his painting called
Ploughing. Jacob Maris was displayed in five
pictures. One of them is the delightfully-handled
work called The Nurse. William Maris is repre-
sented by three cattle pieces, and specimens of the
work of Blommers, Weissenbruch and de Bock are
not missing.
The exhibits that have already been made at
the Fishel, Adler and Schwarz Galleries, New York,
give promise of a full and interesting season. A

number of Dutch painters have been represented,
such men as Neuhuys, the two Maris and Pieters.
B. de Hoog’s work was seen in a cottage interior,
with a similar subject differently treated by Wei-
land. A river view by Thaulow was characteristic
in the treatment of the foreground, marked by the
trunks of two trees, high upon which the light was
falling. Of Jacque there were two fine examples,
and a decidedly interesting portrait of a dark beauty
was shown by Albert Lynch. The new acquisitions
have made the galleries most attractive and the
plans include a display of portraits by J. Koppay,,
the noted Viennese painter, Wilhelm Funk, and.
other American artists.
The appearance of a general catalogue of the-
reproductions published by the Berlin Photographie
Company is a most welcome convenience. This.
book is intended to embrace the information con-
tained in the various catalogues already published..
The subjects are arranged by the artist alphabeti-
cally and a goocl proportion are illustrated. Some
of the entries are supplied with comments. The
biographical notes and dates have been compiled
with care. When possible, the name of the owner
of the original is supplied. Following this list is a
