SPECIAL SPRING NUMBER OF “THE INTERNATIONAL STUDIO,” 1912
The Village Homes of England
THE Special Spring Number of “The Studio” has for its subject “The Village Homes of
England.” These old rustic dwellings are a precious heritage of the past : with them are
associated those ideas of home and comfort that result from long-established custom and usage.
In all parts of the country they are to be found, quaint and picturesque relics of a quiet and homely
taste, erected by the native craftsmen of bygone days. From an architectural standpoint they have
much to commend them, and they offer a valu-
able source of inspiration to those interested
in the designing of cottages.
Attention has been given to such subjects
as: (1) Southern piasterwork, flintwork, brick-
work and masonry; (2) brickwork, flintwork,
timberwork and piasterwork in Berkshire and
Buckinghamshire; (3) stonework in the East-
ern Cotswolds; (4) pargetting, timberwork,
brickwork and thatching in the Eastern Coun-
ties; and (5) Northern masonry and brick-
work. Sections dealing with metal-work, wood-
work and garden-craft add greatly to the in-
terest and value of the book.
For the purpose of illustrating this volume
Mr. Sydney R. Jones has especially prepared
about two hundred pen-and-ink drawings; and
in addition there are several plates in colors
after water colors by the same artist and Mr.
Wilfrid Ball, R. E. "
