SHANG DYNASTY, 1765-II45 B.C.
highest authority on Chinese art, relating
to a certain variety of mirror known as the
“grape mirror.” Professor Hirth states
that the chief ornamental parts of these
grape mirrors, consisting of grapes, vines
and leaves, were greatly influenced by
Greek patterns. They were among the
most valuable relics of ancient art of
the Imperial Museum of the Middle
Ages, and are placed by Chinese archeolo-
gists as belonging to the time of the Han
dynasty, B.c., 206-221. Professor Hirth
has established the fact that the grape, to-
gether with a number of other elements of
culture, was unknown in China prior to
the celebration expedition of the Emperor
Wu-Ti, sent on a political mission to the
Indo-Seythians into the neighboring coun-
try of Bactria, the easternmost of the
Greek kingdoms in Asia. The return of
General Chang K’ien opened up a new
world of art to the Chinese which largely
revolutionized and deeply affected their
cultural life.
