“The World's Leaders” is a new series
of biographies designed not so much to
recount history as to portray the men who,
in their respective departments, have made
history. The contents of each book is a
biography rather than a treatise on the
field of activity in which its subject gained
eminence. The purpose of the present
volume is to give in compact form the
results of the latest researches and criticism
concerning the lives of the painters and the
authenticity of many of their works. The
book contains a portrait of each of the
painters whose life is here recorded, the
frontispiece being that of Leonardo da
Vinci from the supposed portrait of the
artist in the Royal Palace, Turin. The
book is not only reliable and instructive,
but interesting and inspiring as well.
Fine and Industrial Arts in Element-

This book gives a survey of the place
which the various phases of fine and indus-
trial arts should occupy in elementary
schools. It discusses the educational aims
and significance of drawing, design and
constructive activities, offering suggestions
for specific problems and a discussion of
the standards of attainment which may
reasonably be expected at each stage of the
work. The various subjects are ade-
quately illustrated with drawings, and with
photographic reproductions of the work of
children. The book is planned to give
information and assistance to grade teach-
ers whose work includes instruction in the
arts; to special teachers who are looking
for suggestions useful in the arrangement
of courses, and to superintendents who
wish a discussion of the function of the
fine and industrial arts in elementary
schools.
