32 FRAGMENTS OF ,

similar to the tile ornaments of the Parthenon. Above the plinth each has one acanthus ornament,
nearly alike in them all. From that the first has one spiral tendril on each side to support the
upper ornament, the three succeeding examples two tendrils, and the furthest three, all rising out
in the same manner from the acanthus. Those with the figures 3, 4 and 5, have the upper orna-
ment, in form a semi-circle; the one with the figure 2, the semi-circle forms the top part, the
ornament being much deeper. Of the upper part of the ornament of the first but few traces
remain, and must be considered therefore merely conjecture; the other four are entire. Of these
the centre one, numbered 3, is beautifully executed, and the last, numbered 5, is also of very good
carving, and much resembles in dimensions and design that of baked clay to the temple of Diana
Propylasa at Eleusis. Three of the examples have five petals of honeysuckle on each side the
centre; the Other one has three. These are all sunk or fluted, slightly varying only in the form
which the three small sections figured 1, 2 and 3 give. The honeysuckle ornaments of the second
and fifth tile ornament is like fig. 1 of the sections, that of the third like fig. 2, and the fourth
like fig. 3.

There appears to be but two instances of this species of cornice ornament carved in marble
hitherto ascertained with the temples to which they belonged ; the one of the temple near Phigalia,
the other of the Parthenon: and the five Athenian instances now described cannot from locality
be classed to appertain to any of the temples at Athens at present known to us. The last was found
placed to ornament the top of the gable of a modern house near the choragic temple of Lysicrates,
and the fragment of the first was in the garden wall of a modern house below the cave of Pan;
the one in the centre was brought to me while in Athens, which I purchased, as were also I
believe the one to the right and to the left of the centre. The one in the centre in the lower part
nearest resembles that of Phigalia, and in the ornament above as the others resembles that of the
Parthenon : and if it had been of sufficient dimensions, might have been supposed to have belonged
to the Theseion. The present examples appear to have been all solid in the under part, differing
from those usually of baked clay; Underneath is the side elevation and section, both figured 2, to
correspond with the elevation, numbered 2. The section is of that part of the back of the orna-
ment that is in continuation of the joint tiles, shewing the method adopted of forming its under
part as a tenon to let it into the top of the cornice. Adjoining is the side elevation, plan and
section, each figured 3 of the one with the corresponding number in the elevation, as those num-
bered 4 and 5 below are of their respective elevations above.

PLATE XXIX. VARIOUS FRAGMENTS.

The ornament on the upper part of the Plate seems to have been the centre acroterium of a
pediment: it is however, as well as the fragments beneath, much injured, and has required the aid
of a greater liberty of restoration than any other of the marble fragments described in this work.
It was found with the acroterium adjoining before given; and as it resembles it in those parts that
remain in the style and character of the carving, the honeysuckle ornament in the centre has, with
the exception of a small portion of its lower part, been merely repeated from that to complete
its general effect, and the sections of those parts still remaining are detailed beneath.
