53, 54] LAMBETH LIBRARY 8/
53, 54. Harpsfield’s historia ecclesiastica. (G. (3. 5, 6)
Paper, 14I x 8f, two volumes in one, ff. 282, 293, 26-27 lines
to a page. Circa 1569-75, in the conventional florentine hand, cer-
tainly not autograph, with corrections by a different hand, possibly
Harpsfield’s.
In no. 53 ff. 1-4, 8b, 9% iob, 11, 65-67, 152b, 153-155, 206-208,
245, 282b and in no. 54 ff. 73b, 74-77, 222b are blank.
53 incipit f. 5 Ad Lectorem : in the bottom margin is written
‘ 1 Lumley1.’
54 incipit f. I Vndecimu seculum: in the bottom margin ‘2
Lumley.’
There is no title or other identification of the work : in the
original catalogue of Bancroft’s books it is ‘ Harpsfield Historia
Ecclesiastica 2bus vol. f.’ in the Pars borealis of the Library; in
Abbot’s the same and numbered L 3, L4. The two volumes pro-
bably bound in one in Sancroft’s time are inscribed on the back in
his writing ‘Nic. Harpsfie[ ] | Hist: Ecclesiastica Angl. | Secula
xiii | 53:54’ and the last line of no. 54 f. 291 v° is also added by
Sancroft probably because the ‘ 13 Seculum’ ended at the top of an
original f. 292 which had suffered like the last leaf of no. 53 from
damp.

1 Lord Lumley seems to have had another copy of part of the history. In the
Catalogue of his Library (MS. Trin. Coll. Camb. O. 9. 38) is Nic. Harpsfeldii eccl. hist,
ad finem xmi seculi, now Royal MS. 13. c. IX. On Lumley MSS. at Lambeth see the
Introduction.
