102. Lucas et Johannes Glosati. < fol. So
I R. 5
Vellum, I2| x 9, ff. 2 + 243 + 2, text and gloss, text 21 lines,
gloss 42. Cent, xii-xiii: finely written : two volumes : at least three
scribes.
Calf binding, pr. 3 a
Collation: a2 i8 (wants 2) 28 (wants 2 : 2 blank leaves in supply)
38—188 194 | 208 (wants 1) 2i8-3i8,
It may be from Lanthony (No. 19 Luc. et loh. in uno vol.
magno glosati) but the writing and ornament strongly suggest to
me St Albans as the place of production. There are special details
which to me are of importance : (1) the presence of a peculiar
imitation of marble in the decoration, in which the surface is
delicately mottled with all manner of colours ; (2) an initial in
which the heads of the four Evangelistic creatures are set on one
body; (3) (less distinctive) the conspicuous green edging of the
initials and other ornaments. The marbling (which is very singular)
is found in other St Albans MSS., Trin. Coll. Camb. B. 5. 3,
Corpus Chr. Camb. 48, St John’s, Camb. 68 {Cat. p. 93). The
initial is paralleled in B. 5. 3 (see pl. XIH of my Catalogue, vol. iv).
The writing also resembles that of B. 5. 3. The green edging is, I
think, a characteristic, though not a peculiarity, of St Albans’ books
of this period.
No. Ill is an example of a book owned by St Albans which
made its way to Lanthony.
