GARDEN ORNAMENT

225

Long Wittenham,
Berkshire. Summer-
house with open side.
By Mr. E. Guy
Dawber. Many
summer houses are
useless as a quiet
retreat for reading
or writing because
they have no side light,
but here the wide
opening not only gives
another view of the
garden and pergola,
but a good light for
reading.

An 18th century
garden-house at the
angle of walls. So good
a building should be
carefully guarded from
any encroachment by
ivy or ampelopsis,
though a graceful wall
plant, cleverly guided,
may add to its beauty
and do no harm.

Summer Farm,
Surrey. A range of
cow-houses converted
into a loggia. By
Sir Edwin Lutyens.
Many sets of old farm
buildings arenowbeing
arranged as adjuncts to
dwelling houses, and
resourceful architects
are glad to take advan-
tage of a long range of
shedding for such a
purpose as is here
shown.
