The effect of these gardens, already sufficiently complicated, is by no means improved by the
introduction of rows of sparkling spar. It often comes about that a garden has been burdened,
or, as in this case, absolutely disfigured, by some such device, adopted in obedience to some
passing fashion; it has gone on from one generation to another till the owners have come
to consider it a tradition of the place and have retained it for that reason. But a bad tradition
is unworthy of respect or retention, and it is to be hoped that, with the better knowledge of
gardening that now prevails, a custom, originally founded on an error of taste, maybe abolished.
